What Are Implant Dentures?
An implant denture combines the convenience of dentures with the durability of dental implants. Essentially, it is a denture that secures in place via four to six dental implants, providing unprecedented security to eat, speak, and smile with confidence.
Implant dentures are a more lifelike, comfortable alternative to traditional dentures that simply sit atop of your gums. Depending on your unique smile needs and preferences, your dentist may recommend one of two types of implant dentures during your consultation:
Fixed/Permanent Implant Dentures
Fixed implant dentures (sometimes referred to as “hybrid prosthesis”) are designed to stay securely in place and can only be removed by your dentist. Typically, they secure to your jaw with four to six strategically placed and positioned dental implants in your jawbone. Many patients prefer this type of implant denture because it allows them the opportunity to forget they even have dentures! However, this option does require you to have greater jawbone density.
Removable Implant Dentures
Removable implant dentures are sometimes called “snap-on dentures.” Although they are firmly rooted in your jawbone with dental implants, removable implant dentures use clips (bar-retained) or ball sockets (ball-retained) so that you can easily remove them when necessary. Although these dentures do need to be removed daily for cleaning, they typically only require two to five implants.
The Implant Denture Procedure
Getting your implant dentures is a multi-step process that begins right here at Plush Dentistry with a consultation with your dentist. If you need any preliminary treatment, we can either treat you here or refer you to a local surgeon. Once your mouth is healthy enough to undergo surgery, your procedure will be scheduled offsite with one of our trusted local dental implant specialist partners.
Following surgery, your dental implants will fuse with your jawbone via osseointegration. This process takes about three to six months to complete. Once your mouth is ready, you will then have a second, minor procedure to attach the abutments to your prosthetics. This is the part that holds your denture to the dental implants. While your mouth heals from this step, the dental lab will be busy creating your custom denture from the impressions taken during your consultation.
Although this entire process does take longer than it would to get traditional dentures, most patients find that the amazing results are well worth the wait!
Am I a Candidate for Implant Dentures?
Most adults who are in good oral and overall health are excellent candidates for implant dentures, especially if you are tired or frustrated of dealing with the hassle of traditional dentures.
During your consultation with Plush Dentistry, we’ll review your specific needs and goals before explaining all your dental implant options and our recommendations.
To be a good candidate for treatment, you’ll need to be in good enough health to undergo minor surgery, and your smile must be free of any oral health issues such as cavities or gum disease before any work can begin. You’ll also need to have enough jawbone density for the type of implant denture you’ve chosen (removable implant dentures require less jawbone density and fewer dental implants).
If necessary, we can help you schedule a bone graft or sinus lift procedure to help get your jaw ready for your brand-new smile!
