If your child complains about a toothache, it’s understandable for your immediate first thought to be that they have a cavity. After all, cavities aren’t exactly uncommon in children. That said, it’s best not to jump to conclusions! A toothache can mean many different things for both adults and kids (which is why it’s important to visit a dentist ASAP). Here are some examples of other reasons your child could be having a toothache.
#1. “Growing Pains”
Depending on the age of your child, they could simply be growing in new teeth. If your kiddo already has all of their baby teeth, though, it’s still worth visiting a children’s dentist. A toothache in this situation could mean that the adult tooth is having trouble erupting properly.
#2. Something Stuck Between the Teeth
Getting food stuck between teeth usually isn’t a big deal. But it can cause more discomfort than you might think, and if the object is anything other than food, it should be removed promptly. Check your child’s mouth – if you can’t free the object with some gentle wiggling or floss, ask your dentist for some professional assistance.
#3. Sinus Infection
Congestion in the sinus cavities can cause swelling, and since the sinuses are located just above the teeth, this can put some uncomfortable pressure on your little one’s pearly whites. This type of toothache is usually spread over multiple teeth and is often accompanied by sniffling and coughing.
#4. Tooth Sensitivity
Does your child say their tooth hurts right after eating something cold or hot? Then their tooth may be sensitive. This is a fairly common problem and, like the previous possible causes of toothaches, is usually relatively harmless. Swapping your child’s toothpaste for one with an anti-sensitivity formula could help.
That said, if the ache lingers for more than a few seconds after contact, visit the dentist to make sure there isn’t a cavity.
#5. Dental Damage
Injuries or accidents that cause damage to a tooth’s surface can make it more vulnerable to discomfort. The outermost layer of a tooth is responsible for protecting the more delicate inner layers, so if those inner layers become exposed, that can translate to a toothache. Your child may need a filling or crown to help shield their tooth.
#6. Poor Gum Health
Sometimes the problem isn’t the tooth, but the gum tissue surrounding it. Since they’re so close together, irritation in the gums can seem like it’s coming from the tooth. If your child has red, swollen gums or experiences bleeding after brushing and flossing, definitely call their dentist!
#7. Dental Abscess
A dental abscess is essentially an infection that looks like a small, pimple-like bump near the gumline. It can be painful and needs to be addressed immediately, but do not pop it at home! Otherwise, the infected fluid inside could spread to other places in the mouth as well.
Conclusion
It’s always concerning when your child is in pain or uncomfortable. While it is important to have toothaches examined by a dentist, they don’t always mean that your child’s oral health is at risk. Try not to panic – your child’s dentist will provide an official diagnosis and can help take care of your kiddo’s smile!
