Did you know that approximately 77 million Americans have dental benefits? Most people have private coverage through an employer or group program. When it comes to receiving dental care, dental insurance makes a huge difference in terms of treatment cost, but does this apply to cosmetic dentistry? Are there any cosmetic treatments that are covered? Continue reading to learn more about dental insurance in relation to cosmetic dentistry.

Is Cosmetic Dentistry Covered by Insurance?

Generally, dental insurance doesn’t cover elective procedures, and most cosmetic treatments fall under this category. However, there are sometimes exceptions if the treatment you’re getting also provides oral health benefits. For instance, a crown or veneer may receive partial coverage if it builds up or protects a damaged tooth. Gum recontouring may qualify for some coverage if an infection was previously present in the gums. Ultimately, you should talk with your dental team and insurance provider to determine what is covered in your specific plan. No one wants unnecessary surprises on their bill.

What Do Dental Insurance Plans Cover?

Most dental insurance plans follow a 100-80-50 coverage structure. This means that they will cover the following dental treatments and procedures:

  • 100% of Preventive Care: This includes regular cleanings, checkups, routine X-rays, and more.
  • 80% of Basic Procedures: Basic procedures include fillings, gum disease treatment, and other non-invasive procedures.
  • 50% of Major Procedures: Things like root canal therapy, dental implants, dental crowns, and orthodontic treatment often fall into this category.

What Other Financial Options Are Available?

If you don’t have dental insurance, or the treatment you’re considering is not covered by your plan, this doesn’t necessarily mean that you’re left completely on your own. Keep your eye out for the following options:

  • Dental Membership Plan: Some practices offer dental membership plans that can help you save on treatments completed at their office for an annual fee. Sometimes, you can get discounts on cosmetic treatment through these plans.
  • Financing: Many practices work with third-party financing companies that can split the cost of your treatment into manageable monthly installments with little-to-no interest.
  • Special Offers: Dental offices often have special discounts on specific treatments. Ask your dental team to find out if any are available for the treatment in question.

Everyone’s dental insurance plan and smile goals are unique, so it’s important that you discuss finances ahead of time so you know what you can expect. You’ll be showing off your enhanced smile in no time!
